Muscular Neck Pain & Trigger Points

General muscle spasm accompanies most musculo-skeletal conditions and knots or trigger points are often a persistent cause of pain.
Trigger points are small areas of muscle spasm, about the size of a pea, that are tender to touch and may cause local or referred pain.

  • Trapezius
  • Levator scapulae
  • Sub-occipitals

Cause: There are many causes of muscle pain and trigger points including;  trauma, poor posture and overuse. However, pain arising from muscle is often a symptom rather than the cause. Muscle spam accompanies all injuries. It’s the body’s way of reducing/preventing movement, limiting further damage.

Symptoms: Pain arising from muscle is generally a dull ache and may be local or referred. If you have numbness or tingling or pain from the neck that travels into the shoulder, arm or hand, it’s highly unlikely to be muscular in origin.

Treatment: The most effective way to eliminate trigger points and stop pain is acupuncture and dry needling. It is also important to address the underlying cause which may be poor posture or an underlying complaint.
